Motivational interviewing with Dr William Miller – Top 3 Take home messages

Achieve your goals as a coach and family member by understanding change psychology.

Making shift happen – Switch – John Berardi

What do these 3 popular resources have in common?
They are all advanced in the techniques of “change psychology.” If you want to get anywhere with helping your athletes / family members or work mates then you’d be well served to learn about this emerging field.
As a coach I have found myself both using and doing the opposite of what motivational interviewing experts recommend. After watching this video and reading the first few chapters of Dr William Millers book I can see that getting this stuff right is going to be the difference between winning and losing or even more importantly, creating positive relationships and negative ones with my athletes and staff.
If you’re interested in improving your skills in this area I recommend you watch this video and take some notes. It will help you understand the role of the coach in change and what doesn’t work.

My top 3 take home messages on motivational interviewing

1. You have to have real empathy and be able to express it.
2. What your client says is much more important than what you say. If you challenge them in the wrong way they will take the counter position and defend it.
3. Motivational interviewing is a skill that must be developed through quality training just like the snatch in olympic lifting.
